Not all water softeners are created equal when it comes to the way they treat the environment.
Water softeners traditionally utilize the "ion exchange" water softener method, in which the spherical surfaces of many tiny resin beads are bathed in salt water (regeneration) to get coated in sodium ions. Hard water then moves through the softener and the sodium ions trade places with the mineral ions present, which makes the water soft.
Although this method is proven effective at creating soft water, it has begun to be frowned upon by various municipalities due to the increase in chloride levels that get discharged into the local water system after awater softener has finished recharging the softener resin.
