Hard Water - Reverse Osmosis

What is hard water, exactly?

Water is said to be hard when it contains an excessive amount of dissolved minerals (typically, calcium and magnesium). Minerals get into your water when it passes over or through the ground on the way to reservoirs that store your water for future use.

Should I worry about hard water?

Because the dissolved minerals that cause hard water create various problems once they reach your house. With hard water passing through your pipes, minerals gradually collect and, over time, shrink their diameter, which restricts water flow. Your water heater and other appliances are especially susceptible to damage, since minerals are able to scale up more easily in warm water, potentially ruining your appliances over time. Your clothes may also have issues, since hard water inhibits the normal cleansing action of typical laundry detergents, preventing them from looking their best.

What is chloride?

Chloride is a negatively charged ion of the element chlorine. Paired with a sodium ion, it makes salt. Chloride is needed in humans to aid in proper metabolism.

Why is chloride bad for water?

Chloride is flushed from water softeners during their regeneration phase. When many softeners are concentrated in an area, that can cause a significant increase in chloride levels, and high chloride levels pose a risk to the local watershed, causing harm to farmland and fish that come in contact with it.

What is chloramine?

Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia and is approved by the EPA for use as a disinfectant in the public water supply.

Is chloramine safe?

Chloramine has been used widely for over a century and water treated with it has been declared safe for public use; however, chloramine does need to be filtered out in special situations, such as when dealing with people with kidney ailments or filtering water for an aquarium.

What are the drawbacks of chloramines?

Chloramines are also susceptible to nitrification, which results in bacterial growth if water is left sitting or long periods of time. Castaic Lake Water Agency has mode capital improvements aimed at decreasing water stagnation that diminish the likelihood of nitrification. Chloramines may also decay the rubber parts of household plumbing and water heaters more quickly. (Kirmeyer et al. 2003)

What are other chemicals in my water that I should be wary of? Chlorine: Added to most municipal water supplies, this disinfectant hardens arteries, irritates skin and sinus conditions, and aggravates asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems.

Chloroform: This powerful by-product of chlorination causes excessive free radical formation (which accelerates aging), enables normal cells to mutate, and allows cholesterol to oxidize.

DCA (Dichloroacetic acid): This chlorine by-product alters cholesterol metabolism.

MX (another chlorinated acid): Another by-product of chlorination , MX is known to cause genetic mutations and has been found in all chlorinated water for which it was tested.

How can the Puroserve HT2000 solve my problems?

The Puroserve HT2000 is an advanced Whole House Reverse Osmosis System that can deliver filtered, softened water to every faucet in your household. The heart of the unit is the high-production, ultra low energy reverse osmosis membrane, which provides a very high (over 90%) rate of filtration without the need for salt or other chemicals to be used in the process. The membrane simply allows pure water flowing to you, while keeping harmful chemicals and substances down to as low a level as possible.
