Emergency Preparedness Water Storage
Storing water for an emergency is the most important part of your survival kit. A natural disaster can contaminate or limit access to your municipal water source and can make a bad situation even more dangerous. The human body can handle a substantial amount of time without food, however, our bodies can succumb to the effects of dehydration in less than a week. Every cell in our body needs water in order to function. You can prepare for a natural disaster or other emergency by prioritizing water as the most important element in your family’s emergency plan.
How Much Water Do I Need?
There is no such thing as having too much emergency water. Experts say that you should store at least one gallon of water per person per day. However, the old adage “better to have a gallon you do not need than to need a gallon you do not have” certainly applies with something as important as drinking water. Individual needs also vary depending on a person’s age, their physical condition, activity level, diet and climate. Do not forget that clean drinking water is also necessary for cooking and personal hygiene needs.
To determine your water needs, take the following into account:
- One gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation.
- Keep at least a one week supply of water per person, but a two week supply is better if you can manage it.
- Children, nursing mothers and sick people may need more water.
- A medical emergency might require additional water.
- Warm weather climates may demand more water. In hot temperatures water needs can double.
